PUNA
Hilo motorcyclist dies after running into dog

A 62-year-old Hilo man died Tuesday from injuries received in a motorcycle crash on Pohoiki Road, a half-mile east of Hinalo Street, police said.

He was identified as Robert B. De Sa of Hilo.

Puna patrol officers responding to a 3 p.m. call determined that De Sa was riding a 2008 Honda Shadow west on Pohoiki Road when it struck a dog that had run onto the road.

De Sa, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle and received head injuries.

Fire rescue personnel took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 10:37 p.m.

Police do not believe that speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

This is the 22nd traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 32 at this time last year.
