'Iolani's Chan tops John A. Burns Challenge Cup amateur team

Advertiser Staff

'Iolani School freshman Lorens Chan topped the Governor's Cup list with 1,217.50 points to join three collegians, Alex Ching, Travis Toyama and Max Bonk, in becoming eligible to play for the 12-man amateur team in this year's John A. Burns Challenge Cup.

Ching, a 2008 Punahou School graduate who is at San Diego University, was second with 1,050 points, winning four tournaments, including the Manoa Cup, which made him an automatic qualifier. Toyama, a University of Hawai'i senior, also got an automatic exemption for winning the Hawai'i State Amateur. Bonk, a 2007 Hawai'i Prep graduate and a Pacific University sophomore, wasn't among the top 20 point-getters because of a limited playing schedule locally. But he earned a spot by winning the Kona Open.

The two-day Governor's Cup against a 12-man professional team is tentatively scheduled for December at the Oahu Country Club.

"I haven't talked to anyone yet if they are able to play," said amateur team captain Phil Anamizu,

The 12 players who make up his team will compete for the one amateur spot in the 2009 Sony Open in Hawaii next January at the Waialae Country Club.
