State teacher of the year announcement due Thursday

The state Department of Education will announce the state's Teacher of the Year award Thursday at the Board of Education's business meeting at Aliamanu Middle School.

At that time, the DOE will honor all of its district Teachers of the Year and will announce who among them is this year's state winner. The presentation will begin at 3:30 p.m.

District Teachers of the Year are:

• Bebi Davis (Honolulu District, Farrington High),

• Glenn Lee (Central District, Waialua High and Intermediate),

• Peggy Ann Pavao (Leeward District, Kapolei Middle),

• Ramona Takahashi (Windward District, Kailua High),

• John Constantinou (Hawaii District, Keaau High),

• Roberta Kokx (Maui District, Kihei Elementary), and

• Mary Lardizabal (Kauai District, Kapaa Middle).

A corporate sponsor, the Polynesian Cultural Center, will award $500 to each district Teacher of the Year. The state Teacher of the Year will receive an additional $1,000.

SMARTer Kids Foundation of Canada will present each district teacher with instructional software, and a SMARTBoard and other classroom technology will be presented to the state winner.

The Hawaii Automobile Dealers' Association will give the state Teacher of the Year a free one-year lease of a new car.
