SAVE THE PLANET

SAVING MONEY AND ENERGY

From Consumer Reports' October edition:

  • Lower the water-heater temperature to 120 degrees to knock up to 5 percent off energy bills.

  • Drain a bucket's worth of water from the water heater a few times a year to remove sediment, which can decrease efficiency.

  • Install a high-efficiency showerhead (reducing hot water use by 50 percent) or upgrade to a low-flow toilet (save about 4,000 gallons per year).

    FINAL WORD

"Every calorie we eat is ultimately the product of photosynthesis — a process based on making food energy from sunshine. There is hope and possibility in that simple fact."

Michael Pollan , in The New York Times Magazine's food issue
