HILO WOMEN PREVAIL

In sweltering conditions, Megan Pachecano coolly hooked a corner kick into the goal to lead the Hawai'i-Hilo women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Grand Canyon yesterday in a Pacific West Conference soccer match at Phoenix.

Pachecano bent the ball into the far end of the goal in the 24th minute, helping the Vulcans improve to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the PacWest. It was Pachecano's team-best 12th goal of the season.

"It was really, really hot," Hilo coach Travis Clarke said. "We were down five players and had only 13 possible players."

Despite the dwindling numbers, Hilo was able to hold off the Antelopes (4-9-1, 3-3), who nearly scored in the 79th minute when Janelle Salazar banged a shot that Vulcans keeper Randi Walters was able to make a save on.

In a physical men's match that saw two Hilo players ejected, the teams battled through two overtime periods with neither able to score.

"They had seven yellow cards and unfortunately we had two red cards," Hilo coach Cam Camarena said. "So we played a good part of the second half and all of the overtime 9 against 11."

Carlos Lopez had three shots and Ivan Mercado made six saves for the Vulcans (7-3-2, 2-2-2). Julien Roberts had six shots for the Antelopes (5-3-4, 4-0-2).

Elsewhere in the PacWest, Cristobal Montes had a goal and an assist as Notre Dame de Namur beat visiting Hawai'i Pacific, 4-0, in a men's match at Belmont, Calif.

Luis Astorga, Christian Rosales and Sean Vogt also scored for the Argos (9-2-2, 5-0-1). Chance Bukoski, Linus Ekden and Nathan Scott each had a shot on goal for the Sea Warriors (6-5-1, 4-2).

In the women's match, Heather Toohey had a goal and an assist to lead the Argos (5-8, 3-3) to a 4-0 victory over the Sea Warriors (3-10, 1-5). Caitlyn McNeely and Jamie Hirai each had two shots on goal for HPU.
