Former University of Hawai'i star Alika Smith is the new boys basketball coach at Academy of the Pacific.

Smith, part of the "Dynamic Duo" with Anthony Carter at UH, led the team to back-to-back National Tournament Invitation appearances in 1997 and 1998 and was a two-time all-Western Athletic Conference pick. Smith's name dots the UH record book — third in 3-pointers made (161), third in scoring (1,415), second in steals (152) and sixth in assists (344).

After his UH career, Smith played for the Continental Basketball Association's Dakota Wizards and was an assistant coach at UH-Hilo and UH.

Smith was a three-time all-state pick at Kalaheo High.

"He's patient, intelligent and understands the life skills gained from high school athletics," Ryan Hogue, AOP's assistant dean and athletic director, said in a release.

Located in 'Alewa Heights, AOP competes in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The school is in the beginning stages of building an athletic practice facility.
