Police are investigating the death of Henry Leroy Mara as a homicide based on findings by the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office.

Mara, 47, died at Hawaii Medical Center-West Sept. 19 after complaining of illness while in police custody. He was treated at the hospital and was about to be released back to police when he became unresponsive at 7:31 p.m.

The medical examiner has deferred on cause of death, pending lab tests ordered several weeks ago.

A police internal investigation found no wrongdoing on HPD's part. The lab tests are expected to provide investigators with a time element for undisclosed internal injuries, possibly from a beating, which Mara may have suffered prior to his arrest.

Mara was arrested without incident Sept. 19 for trespass on a commercial property in Kapolei.

His criminal record includes 17 convictions.

On Sept. 25, Honolulu CrimeStoppers issued a bulletin seeking information from anyone who may have seen Mara on Sept. 19 between 6 and 7 a.m. in either Ma'ili or Kapolei.

Anyone with information can call Honolulu CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.
