Match play event reaches semifinals

Defending champions Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield won two matches yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the Nike Golf/Golf Concepts Aloha Section 4-Ball Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.

Feldmann and Stubblefield will play Shane Abe and John Hearn, starting at 7 a.m. today. The other semifinal match, which starts at 7:10, will pit Kevin Carll and Michael Castillo against Jerry Mullen and Damien Jamila.

The final will be held tomorrow at noon. The winning team will earn $3,500 and points toward Governor's Cup selection and Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year.

HAMAMOTO IN 58TH

Hilo's Jarett Hamamoto shot a 4-over-par 76 yesterday and was tied for 58th heading into the second round of a PGA qualifying school first-stage tournament at Dayton, Nev. The top 23 scorers after 72 holes at the Dayton Valley Country Club will advance to one of four second-stage tournaments starting Nov. 12. There are six first-stage tournaments being held.

WARRIORS TIE FOR 17TH

The University of Hawai'i men's team finished in a tie for 17th yesterday at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in El Cajon, Calif. The Warriors shot 298 for a 30-over total of 894. Colorado State won the 20-team event with 27-under 837. Robert Berton led UH with 69—214 to tie for 28th. San Diego's Alex Ching, a Punahou School alum, tied for eighth with 70—209. Wichita State's Dustin Garza won with 68—200.

VULCANS FINISH THIRD

The Hawai'i-Hilo men's team finished third yesterday at the Sonoma State Men's Invite at Sonoma, Calif. The Vulcans shot 293 for a 2-under total of 862. Chico State won the 11-team event with 26-under 838. Zady Ari led Hilo with 76—216 to tie for 18th. Chico State's Kevin Horan won with 70—206.
