Maui main break affecting service, traffic in Paia

Advertiser Staff

A six-inch water main break at the intersection of Hana Highway and Baldwin Avenue on Maui yesterday affected water service to residents and businesses in Pa'ia, Kuau and Skill Village.

The main break on the roadway was reported at 2:30 p.m. Crews are repairing a crack in a section of the main, officials said.

A tanker is dispensing water at Kuau Mart on the Hana side of Pa'ia.

Motorists are being advised to expect delays and exercise caution in the area as the Kahului-bound lane of Hana Highway is closed and police are using the Hana-bound lane to direct traffic in both directions.

Jacky Takakura, the Department of Water's administrative officer, said water service could be restored by 9 p.m.

Due to the water main break residents and businesses in Pa'ia will experience low water pressure or no water until the break is repaired, Takakura said.
