Kai Golden scored the game-winning goal in the fourth overtime to help Punahou defeat 'Iolani, 7-6, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys water polo match last night.

Golden scored the sudden-death goal with 55 seconds left, helping the host Buffanblu improve to 6-0 in front of a packed crowd that featured Punahou students decked in body paint and nine members of 'Iolani's band that played during timeouts and between periods.

The teams were tied at 5-5 after 28 minutes of regulation. The first two mandatory overtime periods both were three minutes long and not sudden death. The two-minute third overtime and three-minute fourth overtime were both sudden death.

"Our season, we've had one overtime, one last-second shot," said Golden, who finished with two goals. "We really have the idea of weathering the storm, as our coaches say. We weathered 'Iolani's storm."

'Iolani's Kacy Johnson scored with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 5-5 and help the Raiders (4-2) make up a three-goal second-half deficit.

Johnson's potential game-winning attempt was stopped with 3 seconds remaining.

In the first overtime, Punahou's Ruddy Kiessling scored with 1:15 remaining to make it 6-5.

'Iolani tied the game at 6 in the second overtime when Conner Grune scored with 42 seconds left. After Kiessling's shot was stopped by 'Iolani goalkeeper Austin Strong with 22 seconds left, the Raiders had one final chance.

With time winding down, 'Iolani's Vincent Lim took a shot that went into the goal. However, one official waved off the goal, saying he wasn't allowed to shoot because he was fouled inside the five-meter line prior to the play. With time then expiring, the game was sent into sudden death.

Neither team scored in the first sudden-death period.

"We calmed down and we were mentally ready," said Punahou goalkeeper Jimmy Field, who made several saves late in the game. "That's what carried us."

Johnson and David Lim both scored in the third quarter, helping the Raiders get within 5-4. Johnson scored twice for 'Iolani.

"We just got settled and wanted to play our game and focus on what we had to do," said 'Iolani's Rayfe Gaspar-Asaoka, who had one goal.

Golden, Matt Hong, Nick Schaefer and Brett Carter each scored in the first half, helping Punahou to a 4-2 halftime lead. Carter finished with two goals.
