WAIPI'O — They left with team and individual medals.

Leilehua's Bryce Jenkins and Mililani's Kristin Ali Keith won their third straight individual titles at yesterday's O'ahu Interscholastic Association cross country championships at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park. Along with their wins, Jenkins and Keith led their squads to team titles on a grassy and hilly course that turned muddy from a drizzle that evolved into a steady downfall.

"I felt really good," said Jenkins, the two-time defending state boys champion, who won the 3-mile race in 16:37.65. "The rain was awesome. I was wiping my eyes every two seconds, and the mud was unreal."

Jenkins, a senior, was back in winning form. He missed the first part of the season with a stress fracture in his left leg. But he won the OIA Western Division title two weeks ago in just his second race of the season. Yesterday's win was Jenkins' third race of the season, and he was one of four Mules to finish in the top 12 to help the defending state champion win its fourth consecutive OIA title with 44 points.

Leilehua coach Shawn Nakata said Jenkins had been putting in extra time doing cardio workouts at practices and at home to stay in shape.

"The last thing I want is to let the team down," Jenkins said. "I felt I should be here."

Leilehua's Margarito Martinez was second in 16:58.92, with teammates Shannon Cosey sixth in 17:54.67 and Noel Cabato 12th in 18:22.37. 'Aiea was a distant second with 112 points.

In the girls 3-mile race, Mililani's Keith ran neck-and-neck with Kaiser junior Sarah Clapp the entire way. Keith pulled ahead slightly during the second mile and held on down the stretch. Keith, who said she was encouraged from cheers from coaches and teammates along the course, won in 19:33.15. Clapp was second in 19:38.06.

"It's just all the work put in all season," said Keith, a junior and the defending state champion. "I'm not going to give up now."

Mililani placed five girls in the top 20 to take the team title with 37 points. Nicole Painter was third in 20:40.41, Gabriella Jenkins fourth in 20:43.89, Arielle Uejo 14th in 21:35.23 and Taylor Sinn 20th in 21:50.81.

Leilehua finished second with 65 points.

"We have an amazing squad out here," said Painter, a senior captain. "We have such depth and we have nine girls who are so good.

"Our coaches really push us. We concentrate all the time."
