OIA Red football semifinals kick off Friday night

Advertiser Staff

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red is a step closer to determining two of its three Division I state tournament berths with the semifinals Friday at Aloha Stadium.

In the opener, defending champion Leilehua will play Farrington at 4:30 p.m. Kahuku and Wai'anae will follow at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be televised by OC 16.

The winners advance to the Nov. 7 Red championship at Aloha Stadium. Each will secure state tournament berths.

The losers play for third place Nov. 8 with the winner taking the third and last OIA Red berth.

Meanwhile, Radford will meet Campbell for the White title on Nov. 7, also at Aloha Stadium. Both teams have qualified for the Division II state tournament.

Joining the Rams and Sabers in the Division II state tournament are Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Kaua'i and Interscholastic League of Hono-lulu Division II champion 'Iolani.

Kaua'i clinched when Kapa'a and Waimea played to a 10-10 tie. The Red Raiders (4-0) will play Waimea (2-2-1) Friday. 'Iolani (5-2) clinched when Saint Louis beat Damien, 42-12, Friday. The Monarchs and Pac-Five are both 2-5.

Lahainaluna can clinch the Maui Interscholastic League Division II title and state berth with a win against Kamehameha-Maui Friday.

Baldwin (5-0) clinched the MIL's Division I title and state berth with its 29-28 win against the Lunas Saturday.

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation is two weeks away from ending the second round. Kealakehe and Konawaena are first-round champions. If the second-round champions are different, playoffs will be held to determine the overall titles that come with state berths.

The ILH Division I is still open. Saint Louis (5-1) and Punahou (5-1) can clinch by winning their two remaining games. They meet Nov. 12. Kamehameha (4-2) needs to win out to force a tie and a playoff. The Crusaders and Warriors play Thursday at Aloha Stadium.
