Shooters take aim at state titles

Advertiser Staff

Will Interscholastic League of Honolulu teams continue their state air riflery title runs?

The first state tournament of the season — the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Civilian Marksmanship Program air riflery championships — begins this morning at the Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

Either Sacred Hearts or Punahou has won the girls team titles since the tournament began in 1999. Saint Louis and Punahou have won all the boys titles with the exception of Waiakea in 2004.

Sacred Hearts has won the past two state girls titles while Punahou has won the past three boys titles. Back to defend her title is Punahou's Meilin Jia-Richards.

Punahou won this year's ILH boys title, with its Alexander Char claiming individual honors. Sacred Hearts won the ILH girls title, with its Haunani Akana winning the individual crown.

Pearl City swept the O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys and girls team titles. Leilehua's Andrew Nishihara won the boys individual title while Moanalua's Chelsie Hata won the girls title.

Waiakea swept the Big Island Interscholastic Federation titles, led by individual titlists Cameron Yasukawa and Carissa Pajo.

Baldwin boys and Maui girls won the Maui Interscholastic League titles, while the Kaua'i boys and Waimea girls won the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation titles

Shooting begins at 8:30 a.m. and the awards ceremony will be held in the afternoon.
