HA'IKU
Teen motorcyclist dies after crashing into Jeep

A 17-year-old Ha'iku boy died Monday after his motorcycle crashed into a 1998 Jeep Cherokee at the intersection of Kauhikoa Road and Pauhikoalani Place in Ha'iku.

Police said the teenager, Keoni Magliato of King Kekaulike High School, was operating the motorcycle, described as possibly a dirt bike, when the collision occurred around 4:40 p.m. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

The 33-year-old Ha'iku man who was driving the Cherokee and his two passengers, ages 10 and 28, were not injured.

There have been 17 traffic fatalities on Maui this year, compared with 19 at the same time last year. Eight of those deaths involved motorcycle crashes.
