Architects Hawaii Limited is holding its 20th annual pumpkin-carving contest this year. AHL Carvers offer these tips:

1. Use hammer and chisel to begin carving. It makes it easier to get through the tough pumpkin skin.

2. Trace your image on the pumpkin with a red marker.

3. Use serrated knives for detailing.

4. Start with big openings first, working from one side to the other. Work on details after the openings are cut.

5. Preserve the carved pumpkin with Vaseline and refrigeration, to make it last longer.

Vote for your favorite AHL carved pumpkin from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, Halloween, in the American Savings Bank lobby Downtown at 1001 Bishop St. The pumpkins will be on display until 4 p.m. The People's Choice award will net the winner $15. Architects Hawaii staff will vote for the first, second, third and honorable mention awards, with prizes of $100, $75, $50 and $10.
