This holiday season, makeup calls for a golden glow. Soft and sensual, it's a look that seems to illumine the skin from within.

We asked John Fussell, Chanel's national makeup artist, to interpret Holiday '08 for us. The secret, he said, is to capture light, causing it to play across the face. All colors used are from the Chanel Holiday 2008 collection.

TIPS FROM THE PRO

• Achieve big lips by contouring. Shade the inner corners of the mouth with a darker shade. Use a lighter color at the center. Apply soft metallic powder to the outer lip line to capture light and add volume. No injections required.

• Forget the old rule that you can't have a dark eye with a dark lip. It's OK to have both this season.

• Do not apply false eyelashes unless you are in a theatrical situation or having a photo taken. They overpower the eye, especially if you have an Asian eye or a small eye.

• A subtle gold is a finish anyone can wear, from Alex Wek to Nicole Kidman.

• Makeup should be "impressive to women and not offensive to men."

LOOK NO. 1: DAY

Cheeks are cool, in rose or rosy beige. The entire lid is washed with a soft beige eyeshadow, a shade inspired by Coco Chanel's suede furniture. Fussell used a single shimmer shadow, which looks like three shadows because of the way it catches the light. Lips are soft, transparent, with a metallic sheen. Finally, it's all about the J. Lo glow, achieved with a gold highlighting powder dusted lightly wherever the light will fall on the face. "Gold creates the illusion of perfect skin," Fussell said.

LOOK NO. 2: EVENING

Fussell took Lee's day makeup into evening with additional blush to balance the darker lip. He also created a smoky eye by placing eyeliner all the way around the eye, about á of the intensity on the top and 1/3 on the bottom. He smudged the eyeliner with a brush held vertically, stroking from the lash line outward to create the smudge.
