Kalani's Ajimine on a roll on Kauai

Kalani's Dara Ajimine, the two-time defending state champion, leads after the first round of the Billy Tees/HHSAA Bowling State Championships yesterday at Lihu'e Bowling Center on Kaua'i.

Ajimine, a senior, leads the girls competition with a six-game pinfall total of 1,177.

She rolled a 190, 195, 211, 230, 150 and 201, which averages to a 196.

Baldwin's Corey Gushikuma leads the boys competition with a 1192 total.

He rolled games of 202, 159, 167, 246, 215 and 203, which averages to a 199.

Kalani leads the girls team competition with five bowlers totaling 4,920 pins. Kapolei is second with 4,889 and Hilo third with 4,636.

In addition to Ajimine, Brandi Kawamoto rolled a 974, Chayna Matsuo had a 951, Kayla Takara a 917 and Janelle Takahata a 901 for the Falcons.

Kapolei bowlers are Nos. 6 through 8 in the standings: Chrystalynn Bonifacio (1,047), Kimie Roller (1,036) and Raelena Mattos (1,025).

Hilo's top bowler is Makalani Pina, who is 26th at 959.

Pearl City is atop the boys team standings with 5,523 pins. Waiakea is second at 5,430 and two-time defending boys team champion Hawai'i Baptist is third with 5,241.

In the girls competition, Sacred Hearts' Venny Jean Turner is second with 1,113 pins and St. Francis' Chelsea Seki is third at 1,081.

For the boys, Hawai'i Baptist's Brock Wong is second with 1,177 and Kalani's David Good third with 1,171.

Kalani's Ajimine won the 2006 girls state title at the Lihue Bowling Center and she claimed last year's crown by one pin at Hilo Lanes.

She is looking to become the first three-time state bowling champion.

Mililani has claimed two of the last three girls crowns (2005 and 2007).

All bowlers will roll three games today with the girls starting at 8 a.m. and the boys at 11:30.

The league breakdown of individual bowlers at the tournament is O'ahu Interscholastic Association (40 boys/40 girls); Interscholastic League of Honolulu (28/28); Big Island Interscholastic Federation (16/16); Maui Interscholastic League (9/9); and Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation (7/7).
