Kalihi teen killed in Ala Moana shooting; suspect sought

By Robbie Dingeman

Honolulu police are investigating the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Kalihi man at about 2:30 this morning at Ala Moana Beach Park.

The 18-year-old Kalihi man who died after he was shot early this morning at Ala Moana Beach Park has been identified as Khaynava Phanthanouvong.

The city medical examiner's office said an autopsy will be done tomorrow to determine the cause of death. Phanthanouvong was shot at about 2:30 this morning following a large fight near the Magic Island side of the park.

No arrests have been made as of this afternoon.

Honolulu police Maj. Alan Bluemke said police got a report of a big fight between two groups of young men early this morning near the Magic Island side of the park.

Witnesses reported one man pulled out a handgun and began firing. The 18-year-old was shot and his friends apparently drove him to the hospital suffering from two gunshot wounds, Bluemke said.

Bluemke said the two groups were fighting in the street with one group of between 15 and 20 people and the other of about five people. Police said the victim — who was in the smaller group — was reported dead at The Queen's Medical Center at about 2:50 a.m.

Police closed the road on the diamondhead end of the park from early morning until about 8:30, shutting off Magic island and part of the park closest to the concession.

But after collecting evidence that included a slipper in the middle of the road, police removed the crime scene tape and re-opened the park road between the Waikiki Yacht Club and Magic Island.

Bluemke said investigators had found no clear motive for the shooting. "It does not appear to be gang related at this point," he said.

As of mid-morning, he said no one was arrested and no other injuries were reported.

"We are looking for a suspect described as local male, about 5-4, stocky build, wearing a light-colored T-shirt and blue jeans," Bluemke said.

However, he said police are talking to some of those who witnessed the fight. "Checking the area, they were able to detain four males that were involved," Bluemke said. He said police released two of them and were continuing to talk to the other two early today.

Although Ala Moana Beach park officially "closes" each evening from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., the urban park still remains popular with runners, walkers, some homeless campers and other passers-by.
