Roz Savage reached the first milestone of her effort to become the first woman to row the Pacific Ocean alone when she crossed Diamond Head at 5:55 this morning, according to her sponsors.

Savage, 40, rowed more than 2,900 miles in 99 days after departing under San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge on May 25, 2008.

She is aboard her 24-foot-long rowboat, the Brocade. And she plans to complete the next two legs — to the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu and then on to Australia over the next two years.

A spokeswoman said Savage expects to complete the entire journey over three years. That would put her arriving in Australia in the beginning of 2010.

Savage is also the first solo woman to compete in and finish the 3,000-mile "Atlantic Rowing Race" in 2006 from the Canary Islands to Antigua.
