Sports fever will take over Waikiki at 5 p.m. today with the Parade of Champions — a procession of the Waipi'o Little League World Series champs and Hawai'i's Olympic medalists past and present.

At today's parade will be soccer Olympic gold medalist Na-tasha Kai; the 2008 National Bobby Sox 6U champions; the USSSA World Series Baseball U10 O'ahu Dirtbags; and the Royal Hawaiian Band and marching bands from 'Aiea, Castle, Mililani and Waipahu high schools.

In addition, other past Olympi-ans, including Kathy Hammond who won a medal in 1972 for track, and Kevin Asano, for judo in 1988, will participate.

The parade will go down Kala-kaua Avenue from Fort DeRussy to Kapi'olani Park.

Olympic decathlon gold me-dalist Bryan Clay will make an appearance via video at a special Sunset on the Beach at Queen's Surf at 6:45 p.m. Parking is expected to be difficult in Waikiki today, and the public is encouraged to plan accordingly or use public transportation.

"This will be a wonderful celebration, and a great opportunity for fans and supporters to see and congratulate Hawai'i's sports heroes and heroines in person," Mayor Mufi Hannemann said in a prepared statement. "We're all tremendously proud of their accomplishments."

This is the second city-sponsored Parade of Champions. A similar parade was held in January for the UH Warriors, who returned from the Sugar Bowl, and other University of Hawai'i champs, including the women's volleyball and soccer teams.

The Waipi'o Little Leaguers won the World Series in Williamsport, Pa., a week ago, 12-3, against Mexico. They were the second team from Hawai'i to take the Little League title. The first was West O'ahu in 2005.

Waipi'o's win over Mexico was the most lopsided victory by a United States team since the Little League World Series started including foreign teams in the title game in 1967.
