Kenneth 'Ace' Yamase, 58, BIIF director

Services for Kenneth "Ace" Kenji Yamase, executive director of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, will be Saturday at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m.; the service begins at 11 a.m. Casual attire.

Yamase, 58, died Thursday while spear-fishing off Puako on the South Kohala coast. Onlookers brought him to shore and tried to revive him after he stopped breathing.

Yamase took over as BIIF executive director in May 2006, and before that was Waiakea High School's athletic director since 1989. He also coached baseball and girls basketball at Waiakea. Yamase also had coached baseball at Campbell and Leilehua high schools.

He is survived by wife, Helene; son, Keith; daughter, Kaleen Martin; and two grandchildren.
