Channel crossing proves challenging for Hawaii pair

Advertiser Staff

An attempt to swim the English Channel on Saturday ended up being a triumph and a trial for a father-daughter team from Kailua.

Mike Miller, the dad, completed his swim in 16 hours 10 minutes and estimated, in a blog on his Web site, that due to tidal changes he swam an extra 10,000 to 12,000 meters, or approximately six to seven miles. At its narrowest point, the English Channel is about 21 miles across.

Mackenzie Miller, 18, did not finish the channel crossing. She said in her blog that her failure was just the beginning for the next time.

"I learned and gained so much more knowledge by this experience," Mackenzie wrote. "I immediately recognized I hadn't given my all, but now I know what I have to look forward to for next time and there will be a next time."

She hopes to try again next year.
