Federal, state officials to speak on energy issues

The Kaua'i Renewable Energy Conference set for Monday and Tuesday will attempt to answer the question of what it will take to move toward energy independence on Kaua'i.

The day-and-a-half event at the Kaua'i Marriott Resort and Beach Club is hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy, Kaua'i County Office of Economic Development and Kaua'i Island Utility Co-operative.

Speakers include Maurice Kaya, former chief technology officer of the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism; U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye; state Sen. Gary Hooser (D-Kaua'i, Ni'ihau); Bill Parks Jr., deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy; and state Rep. Mina Morita (D-North Shore Kaua'i), chair of the House Energy and Environmental Protection Committee.
