Hawaii Futures Summit at Ihilani

Advertiser Staff

The 2008 Hawai'i Futures Summit, set for Oct. 3 and 4, will feature speakers and activities addressing Hawai'i's transportation and energy infrastructure in the 21st century.

The theme of this year's summit, to be held at the Ihilani Resort & Spa, is "Foundations for Tomorrow."

A featured speaker will be Michael Shellenberger, president of the Breakthrough Institute, who co-wrote the article "The Death of Environmentalism," with Ted Nordhaus. Shellenberger's new book, "Break Through," explores the need for an entirely new politics concerning the future.

The event is hosted by Vision Foresight Strategy and sponsored by First Insurance Company of Hawaii, Enterprise Honolulu and Hokuli'a.

The event will include scenarios of Hawai'i's transportation and energy future, action maps linking community issues to new solutions and possibilities, personal plans that map out new strategies and next steps, and the opportunity to meet and work with professional futurists and local thought leaders, a news release said.

Participants at this year's summit will have the opportunity to work on issues such as reimagining transportation in Honolulu or moving beyond oil and biofuels to map out the cutting-edge energy systems that Hawai'i could build in the years ahead, organizers said.
