A high surf advisory will remain in effect through Sunday for the south-facing shores of all islands, the National Weather Service said.

A powerful low-pressure system in the south Pacific last week generated large open-ocean swells that have arrive in the Hawaiian Islands, the Weather Service said.

The south swell will continue to build to heights of 6 to 10 feet today, forecasters said.

The long travel distance of the swell means that long lulls may occur between the larger sets and beach-goers should be alert for high surf at infrequent intervals.

Elsewhere today, expect surf of 4 to 8 feet along west-facing shores, 3 to 5 feet along north-facing shores and 2 to 4 feet along east-facing shores.

Outlook through Wednesday, Sept. 10: Surf from the south southwest swell will likely drop below advisory level by Sunday afternoon. A small north-northwest swell is expected Monday.
