By Zenaida Serrano

The television and film industry brought $200 million into Hawai'i's economy last year. Want to know more about this exciting field?

The Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library is scheduled to host "Seeing Stars," a weekly series of free programs throughout September that will present an introduction and overview of the television and film industry. All programs will be at the library from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

The schedule and presenters:

  • Tomorrow — The Academy of Creative Media, University of Hawai'i-Manoa. Aimed mainly at high school students, this program covers how to create award-winning films and features the results of promising filmmakers.

  • Sept. 16 — Actor Dann Seki. A local actor who has appeared in television shows including "Lost" and "Magnum, P.I.," Seki will share his secrets on how you can earn money by working as an extra.

  • Sept. 23 — The Hawai'i Film Office with Donne Dawson. Learn how this office helps to attract film projects that stimulate Hawai'i's economy.

  • Sept. 30 — Film producer Margaret South. The film industry evolves around developing a story. Learn the "Art of Story" from South.

The programs are suitable for people 12 and older and will include question-and-answer sessions. Call the library two weeks in advance if a sign-language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed for any of these programs.
