Hawai'i's Tadd Fujikawa started off slowly for the second straight day with bogeys at his first three holes en route to a 1-over 72 and a 3-over 145 total to miss the cut yesterday at the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-sierre, Switzerland.

"Small mistakes cost me the cut. You can't do that on any tour," the 17-year-old Moanalua High senior said. "I had a lot of chances but I couldn't make anything."

Fujikawa has struggled since turning pro last summer. He made history as a 16-year-old at the Sony Open in January 2007, when he became the youngest player in 50 years to make the cut on the PGA Tour.

Rory McIlroy shot an even-par 71 yesterday for a share of the lead with defending champion Brett Rumford after 36 holes.

McIlroy, a 19-year-old Northern Irishman, could not reproduce his opening 63, and Rumford caught him with a second straight 67 to finish the day at 8-under 134.

They were a stroke ahead of Juan Abbate (67), Jean-Francois Lucquin (67), and Alejandro Canizares (68). Peter Lawrie (69) was two strokes behind along with Fredrik Andersson Hed (67) and Simon Dyson (67)

VILLEGAS LEADS BMW

Carmilo Villegas, coming off a tie for third last week that allowed him to advance in the PGA Tour Playoffs, continued his good form with eight birdies on long, soft Bellerive Country Club for a 5-under 65 that gave him a one-shot lead after the first round of the BMW Championship in St. Louis.

Steve Stricker made a 35-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to join Kenny Perry, Tim Herron, Stuart Appleby and Andres Romero at 4-under 66.

Hawai'i's Dean Wilson opened with a 69.

SORENSTAM FIVE OFF LEAD

In her final tournament in Europe, Annika Sorenstam shot a 2-under 71 yesterday to trail by five shots after the first round of the Nykredit Masters at Helsingoer, Denmark.

Martina Eberl of Germany birdied six of the last seven holes for a 66, taking a one-shot lead in the 54-hole tournament. Melissa Reid of England (67) birdied three of the last four holes.

Sorenstam, who will retire at the end of the season, shot par through 14 holes before she birdied the next two.
