New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka said yesterday that Washington Redskins tackle Chris Samuels made a dirty play when he fell on the back of his ankle after being beaten on a pass rush on the final play of the NFL season opener.

Kiwanuka hurt his left ankle on the play. X-rays were negative, but the ankle was still sore yesterday, and so was Kiwanuka.

Replays showed that Kiwanuka beat Samuel to the outside on a pass rush and started moving toward Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell in the waning seconds of the Giants' 16-7 victory.

Samuels quickly turned and made a low lunging tackle, wrapping his arms around Kiwanuka's legs. His upper torso pinned Kiwanuka's left ankle.

"Honestly, I thought it was a dirty play," Kiwanuka said. "There's no question about it. He was definitely beat and instead of recovering or giving up, I don't know how many options you had, but I just don't think there is any place for that in the NFL."

Samuels said he wasn't trying to hurt anyone.

"On that particular play I was just trying to protect my quarterback," Samuels said through a Redskins spokesman.

Replays also showed Samuels wave his arms in a move that suggested that he was upset after the play. He stood over Kiwanuka as Giants trainers came on the field.

REDSKINS

POOR START A CONCERN

Jason Campbell didn't look at all comfortable in the Meadowlands, and neither did Jim Zorn.

Maybe they just aren't meant for each other.

If they are, it's going to take a while to find out.

The Washington Redskins were overmatched and overwhelmed for much of the night in Zorn's coaching debut, 16-7 loss to the New York Giants on Thursday.

"It's not just me; it's everybody," Campbell said yesterday. "Hopefully the light's going to come on quick for all of us, including the offensive coaches, and we build some kind of continuity and get trust going with each other, and get things going."

Campbell didn't complete a pass until the final two minutes of the first half, when the score was already 16-0.

"He had enough minuses to know where he needs to improve," Zorn said.

Rookie Colt Brennan, a University of Hawai'i alum, is the Redskins' third-string quarterback.

ELSEWHERE

Bills: Rather than losing a game paycheck of more than $191,000, Buffalo Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters made plans yesterday to end his holdout and report to the team by today. Bills chief operating officer Russ Brandon released a statement saying, "It is our understanding that Jason has filed a reinstatement letter with the National Football League and that he is reporting to One Bills Drive (the team's headquarters) tomorrow morning."

Cowboys: Dallas cornerback Terence Newman (groin) is listed as questionable for the season opener at Cleveland. Newman's uncertain status on yesterday's injury report was another sign that Adam Jones may make his Dallas debut as a starter tomorrow.

Eagles: Philadelphia could play the season opener without its two top wide receivers after Reggie Brown (left hamstring) missed his second straight practice yesterday. Kevin Curtis is already out indefinitely after hernia surgery.

Denver at Oakland, 4:15 p.m.
