Farrington topples Castle in OIA Red East, 24-6

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KANE'OHE — Apelu So'oalu rushed for 116 yards on 16 carries, including a 33-yard touchdown scamper 58 seconds into the game, and kicked a 33-yard field goal last night to help visiting Farrington bulldoze Castle, 24-6, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football action.

The Governors, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division.

The ninth-ranked Knights fell to 2-2, 1-1.

So'oalu, a hard-running 5-foot-11, 210-pound senior, sat out the first half of last week's 24-10 loss to Saint Louis due to an "off-field problem," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. But on his first carry last night, So'oalu took a handoff and found a hole on the right side, bursting through the line and rumbling 33 yards to the end zone, breaking a couple of tackles along the way.

"The O-line improved big-time this week," So'oalu said. "They were picking up the blitz and blocking hard, man-on-man and body-to-body."

The touchdown was set up after the Govs recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff and gained 15 yards on a late hit penalty by Castle, starting their possession on the Knights' 36.

After So'oalu's touchdown and Robert Molina's extra point, Castle went three-and-out on its opening series, and a shanked 13-yard punt gave Farrington the ball on the Knights' 43. Five plays later, So'oalu kicked a 33-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter.

"I like the way he responded after last week," Okimoto said of So'oalu. "He had a good attitude and accepted his discipline. He's a team player."

The Governors went up 17-0 four minutes into the second quarter after Dayton Kealoha's 8-yard TD pass to Drake Miller on a play-action crossing pattern on fourth-and-goal.

Castle cut it to 17-6 on Blake Rapozo's 1-yard quarterback sneak on third-and-goal with 19 seconds left in the half. But Farrington stretched it to 24-6 two minutes into the fourth quarter after a 36-yard touchdown strike from Kealoha to Miller down the right sideline.

Meanwhile, the Knights' offense continued to struggle and finished the night with just 62 total yards.

"They have a secondary that moves and they took a lot of things away from us," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. "And we couldn't block their three- and four-man rush. When they were on offense, they had some time-consuming drives."
