HAWAII BRIEFS
Shark warnings posted at beaches

Advertiser Staff

Ocean Safety officials yesterday posted signs advising people to stay out of the water at Kailua Beach Park, Bellows Beach and Lanikai Beach due to a shark sighting in the afternoon.

Officials said a crew aboard a Honolulu Fire Department helicopter spotted an 8-foot shark displaying aggressive behavior in the area of Kalama Beach Park.

The helicopter was in the air after the discovery of intestinal remains at Kalama Beach Park about 3:30 p.m. There also were reports of a missing swimmer, but those were not confirmed.

It is not known if the remains are human or animal, and the city medical examiner's office was called to the scene to retrieve the remains and determine their origin. Officials said it's possible the remains are from a turtle or monk seal.

HFD spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said that there are no signs of a shark attack.

Lifeguards cleared the beaches by going into the water on personal watercraft and asking swimmers to come in. Signs remain on the beach.

Officials said they will assess the situation today before deciding whether to remove the warning signs.

For information on ocean conditions, advisories and warnings, the city's Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division provides a recorded report at 922-3888, ext. 51, or visit www.hawaii beachsafety.org.

CHARTER SCHOOL DIRECTOR RESIGNS

Reshela DuPuis, who became executive director of the state Charter School Administrative Office in December, has resigned.

Interim executive director Maunalei Love, who was appointed to the post Tuesday, said yesterday that DuPuis sent out a memo to the staff saying that the Charter School Review Panel had asked her to step down. Love said she could not go into any further details about DuPuis' situation.

She said the review panel was trying to make the transition "as seamless as possible. Although I don't know how seamless a transition can be when something like this happens."

Panel chairman Alvin Parker declined to speak about what led to DuPuis' resignation, calling it "a mutual decision."

DuPuis resigned Aug. 28. Her departure comes two years after the firing of Jim Shon, a former state legislator, from the top charter school job in a closed-door meeting. No reason was given for his dismissal.

He also was replaced by Love on an interim basis.

FREEWAY SHOOTING SUSPECT ARRESTED

Police have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a July shooting on Moanalua Freeway that left another man paralyzed.

The man was arrested without incident at his Alexander Street residence at 1 p.m. Friday, according to a police report.

Police said that on July 9, a car traveling west on the Moanalua Freeway near the Tripler Medical Center off-ramp was fired upon by a passenger in a gray Honda Civic.

A 22-year-old man who was a passenger in the car was hit "in the torso," the police report said, and is paralyzed from the chest down.

The man who was arrested was in custody yesterday.
