SEATTLE — Airfares are up about 30 percent from last year.

But Live Search Farecast out of Seattle says hotel rates in some places like Hawai'i and Florida are down so much that it sometimes makes up for the increase.

The Web site says the combination of high fuel prices, airline capacity and route cuts means holiday travelers may easily spend upward of $100 more per ticket than last year.

The site notes that the average is on top of new fees for baggage, food and other extras.

But the bright side of travel this year is that cheaper hotels may help offset costs.

Farecast says some hotels in vacation destinations are reducing rates so much that the combined cost of air and lodging is no more than last year's.
