Wailea wildfire on Maui extinguished

Advertiser Staff

A wildfire in Wailea that burned nearly 700 acres over a two-week period was declared extinguished yesterday morning, Maui fire officials announced today.

The fire started Aug. 23 and remained smoldering after burning 155 acres. It rekindled four days later and burned an additional 500 acres. The fire was located in Wailea, South Maui, near the Maui Meadows subdivision.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Shimada credited the efforts of firefighters and assistance from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Goodfellow Bros. construction company and Public Works personnel with "an outstanding job protecting life and property."
