Gibson to head Hilton resort

Hilton Hotels Corp. has named Jerry Gibson as area vice president of Hawai'i and managing director of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa.

Gibson most recently served as vice president and managing director of the 2,019-room Hyatt Regency Chicago and has worked previously in Hawaii at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and the Hyatt Regency Kauai.

Gibson also was on the board of directors of the Hawaii Hotel Association and the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative.

He replaces Gerhard Seibert who retired earlier this year.


SONIC HEALTHCARE BUYS CLINICAL LABS

The $121 million purchase of Clinical Laboratories of Hawaii by Sonic Healthcare Ltd. has been completed.

Sonic, an Australian company, has been expanding in its home country as well as the U.S., New Zealand and Europe. In June it announced it had reached an agreement to buy Clinical Laboratories and its associated pathology practice, Pan Pacific Pathologies.

In announcing the transaction, Clinical Laboratories said Sonic intended to keep the local managers and company name while making available to the local company best practices developed at its other operations. Clinical Laboratories has more than 70 locations in the state and has projected revenues this year of more than $110 million .


ICX WINS $2.5M SYSTEMS CONTRACT

ICx Technologies, a technology and sensor company in the detection, security and transportation markets, said it had won a $4.25 million contract with the Hawai'i Department of Transportation for system manager services.

The Arlington, Va.- based company said it will assist the department with its Intelligent Transportation System, including ITS planning, implementation support and system integration. The initial focus of the program includes traveler information, transportation management, and management support of a Freeway Service Patrol Program.


WEST HAWAII UTILITIES SOLD

A subsidiary of California Water Service Group said it had completed its acquisition of West Hawaii Utilities, a group of companies that include Waikoloa Resort Utilities Inc., Waikoloa Water Co. and Waikoloa Sanitary Sewer Co.

Together the group provides water and wastewater services to homes, condominiums, hotels, golf courses and others at the Waikoloa Beach Resort and Waikoloa Village.

California Water Service said the acquisition boosted its Hawai'i customer count to 3,770 from 1,500 and includes six wells, three wastewater treatment plants, and about 10 miles of water mains.


KAPALUA RANKED 5TH-BEST GOLF RESORT

The Kapalua Resort is the fifth-best U.S. golf resort, according to a survey of readers of Travel & Leisure Golf magazine. The resort is listed in its 2008 World's Best Golf Resorts ranking.

The Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club was named as the most underrated resort in Hawai'i in the survey by the magazine, which is published six times a year. The results of the poll are included in the latest edition of the publication, which goes on sale on Sept. 16.

The best U.S. golf resort was Pinehurst Resort. The Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina, Pebble Beach Resorts in California and the Bandon Dunes Golf Resorts in Oregon were also in the top five.
