Innards found at beaches were from animals, officials say

Advertiser Staff

Internal remains found near Kalama Beach Park and at a Leeward area beach park over the weekend were not from humans, the city medical examiner's office said today.

On Saturday, intestinal remains were found at Kalama Beach Park at about 3:30 p.m. and a helicopter scoured the area because a shark was also sighted in the area. No bodies were found, but Kalama, Bellows, Kailua and Bellows Beaches were all closed for a day as a precaution.

On Sunday, a security officer patrolling an Ewa-area beach discovered what he had perceived to be human remains washed up at about 8:30 a.m. The police, U.S. Coast Guard and City Medical Examiner's office were all called to the scene to investigate.

In both cases, the internal organs were from animals, according to the city medical examiner's office.
