FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have signed tight end Chris Baker to a contract extension, a team spokesman confirmed tonight.

The deal, first reported by the NFL Network, was completed last weekend and could keep the seven-year veteran with the Jets through the 2012 season. The team wouldn't divulge contract details, but it is reportedly for another three years on Baker's current deal.

Baker, in the third year of a four-year contract worth $6.6 million, had a career-high 41 catches last season.

The NFL Network reported that the deal will pay Baker $12.2 million over the three new years, which could include $9 million guaranteed if he plays in half the team's offensive plays this season. Baker could also become a free agent if New York decides against paying the guaranteed money.

The 28-year-old Baker ripped the organization and demanded a trade during the summer, saying the Jets refused to renegotiate his contract after claiming that they told his former agent they would look into it.

He missed a portion of minicamp after hurting his back during a practice, and was reportedly fined by the team for missing an injury treatment session. He tempered his scathing remarks during training camp, saying his current agent and the team were in contract talks.

He had two catches for 34 yards in the season opener at Miami, and has 126 receptions for 1,345 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career.
