WAIPAHU
Legacy awardees to be feted at Willows Sept. 20

Former Oahu Plantation manager William Balfour, Arakawa's store icon Goro Arakawa and World War II veteran and educator Domingo Los Banos will be honored by Hawaii's Plantation Village at a banquet Sept. 20 at the Willows Restaurant in Mo'ili'ili.

The three are the first to receive HPV's new Plantation Legacy Awards, recognizing those who have demonstrated "a commitment to honor and perpetuate the legacy of Hawai'i's sugar plantation communities."

Cost is $100. Half and whole tables are also available at $800. Deadline to register is Friday. Call 677-0110 for details.

The event is also a fundraiser for Hawaii's Plantation Village, a nonprofit living-history museum and ethno-botanical garden on Waipahu Street, on 50 acres near the former O'ahu Sugar Mill site.

The evening starts at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and silent auction. The Plantation Legacy Awards program, dinner and entertainment start at 6.
