HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island grand jury has indicted a former hip-hop dance instructor on 34 felony sexual assault charges involving three children who allegedly had sexual contact with the woman over a three-year period.

Raysean Paglinawan, 21, is being held at Hawai'i Community Correctional Center after turning herself in to Kona police last week.

Paglinawan taught a hip-hop dance class in the summer of 2004, one of a number of programs at Na'alehu Theatre funded by a grant from the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. The program had an anti-drug theme, and was open to youngsters ages 7 to 17, according to a state newsletter.

There is no indication in the indictments whether any of the alleged victims were students of Paglinawan, who was 17 herself when she taught the class.

An Aug. 28 indictment filed in Hilo Circuit Court charges Paglinawan with five counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault for allegedly engaging in sex acts with a minor younger than 14 between June 1, 2004, and Aug. 30, 2004.

Paglinawan was also indicted for five counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault for sex acts from Aug. 31, 2004, to Aug. 30, 2005, apparently involving the same child. The child is referred to in the indictment only by initials.

She was also indicted on three counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault for alleged sex acts with a different child from June 1, 2006, through Dec. 19, 2006. That child was younger than 14 years old at the time, according to the indictment

Other charges included three counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault for alleged sex acts involving the second child from Dec. 20, 2006, through June 6, 2007, when the second child was older than 14 but younger than 16.

Paglinawan was also indicted on three counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault for additional alleged sex acts involving the second child between July 15, 2007, and July 31, 2007.

She was also indicted on two additional counts of first-degree sexual assault for additional alleged sex acts involving the second child on Aug. 1 and Aug. 2, 2007.

Paglinawan was also indicted for violating a protective order between Dec. 20, 2006, and June 16, 2007, in Ka'u, and for violating a protective order and second-degree custodial interference in Kona between July 15, 2007, and Aug. 2, 2007, for allegedly taking a child out of state.

A second indictment charges Paglinawan with two counts of third-degree sexual assault and one count of first-degree sexual assault for allegedly having sexual contact with a third child on May 27, 2006.

If convicted, Paglinawan faces up to 20 years in prison on each of the first-degree sexual assault charges, and up to five years in prison on each of the third-degree sexual assault charges.
