Castle rallies past Roosevelt

By Kalani Takase
Advertiser Staff Writer

KANE'OHE — Blake Rapozo turned what could have been a bad night into a win.

The Castle quarterback threw for 290 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host Knights to a 19-6 win over Roosevelt last night.

Castle scored 19 unanswered points on its way to improving to 3-2, 2-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference. Roosevelt fell to 1-4, 0-3 in the Red East.

"It was a much needed and great victory for us," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. "Especially coming off an abysmal performance against Farrington and going into a bye week, we really needed to point ourselves in the right direction."

Castle played with just 28 players suited up.

"I think it's a credit to those guys that they persevered, they hung in there. We had many guys going two ways and they didn't give up," Maeda said.

It was the Rough Riders who controlled the clock early on. Aided by four Castle penalties on its opening drive, Roosevelt drove 78 yards on 16 plays, capped by a 2-yard touchdown pass from Shon Fujii to Jordan Delos-Santos. However, the extra-point attempt was no good and Roosevelt led 6-0.

Castle did not run an offensive play until there was 3:15 left in the opening quarter.

Rapozo began the night with incompletions on his first five attempts.

The Knights sputtered out of the gates, giving up two sacks in their first three plays, including a fumble that was recovered by Roosevelt's Corey Sakai. However, the Rough Riders 28-yard field attempt four plays later was blocked.

"The first half we started off kind of slow," Rapozo said. "We were kind of antsy for the game."

Castle got the ball back with 2:26 left in the first half. Rapozo connected with Keli'i Garcia on a deep pass along the right sideline that gained 42 yards and set up a 6-yard touchdown from Rapozo to Lowen Rogers on the following play. The extra point was blocked after a botched hold to tie it at 6 at the half.

The second half was all Knights.

Castle scored on its first possession of the second half on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Rapozo to Shayden Kehano, who finished with four receptions for 90 yards.

"(Kehano) brings everything to the table for every game," Rapozo said. "He gets open like 99.9 percent of the time."

After forcing another Roosevelt punt, Castle used a five-play drive to extend its lead.

Rogers hauled in his second touchdown pass of the night with 6:09 left in the third to make it 19-6. The junior receiver got behind a linebacker and Rapozo hit him in stride as he cross the goal line.

Rapozo finished 17 of 28 passing.
