How Hawai'i Reps. Neil Abercrombie and Mazie K. Hirono and Sens. Daniel Akaka and Daniel K. Inouye voted in key legislation last week.

    KEY HOUSE VOTE

    1. Federal Highway Trust Fund

The House voted 376-29 Thursday to pass an $8 billion package to rescue the Federal Highway Trust Fund. The fund, which pays for road and bridge projects across the country, is on the verge of running out of money because of declining gas tax revenues. The Senate had passed the bill by voice vote a day before. The bill now goes to President Bush.

    KEY SENATE VOTES

There were no key Senate votes this week.

    WHAT'S AHEAD

The Senate begins with the $612.5 billion defense authorization bill for fiscal 2009 before moving to energy legislation that would open up areas of the East Coast and the gulf to offshore oil drilling. The House starts with an energy package that would allow oil drilling 50 miles offshore but would cost the oil industry its tax breaks and royalties. The House also could take up legislation that would clarify the Americans With Disabilities Act or a bill covering new gun regulations in the District of Columbia.
