No. 3 Saint Louis' defense disarmed the weapons of top-ranked Punahou and the Crusaders cruised to a 40-19 win last night in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I season opener before a crowd of about 7,000 at Aloha Stadium.

The Crusaders (3-0 overall, 1-0 ILH) limited Punahou starting quarterback Cayman Shutter to 63 yards before he gave way to Kimo Makaula, who had 168 yards in playing catchup. He was intercepted twice. Punahou running back Dalton Hilliard was held to eight yards in 10 carries.

"We knew they were going to give us a ride," Saints' defensive lineman Moses Samia said. "They were ranked No. 1. That was our mentality."

Saint Louis quarterback Jeremy Higgins passed for 361 yards and rushed for a 35-yard TD when time ran out to end the game.

The Buffanblu (3-1, 0-1), who have dropped their last five meetings with the Saints, were no match for the Crusaders on both sides of the line of scrimmage. The defense had two sacks and two interceptions, and the special teams added a recovered muffed punt.

"They were able to get pressure with just four guys and get (pass coverage) with seven," Punahou coach Kale Ane said.

Ane added the trip last week to Washington state had no effect on his team.

"I thought we were well prepared," he said.

The Crusaders' defense dominated the first half, holding the Buffanblu to just 62 yards of total offense. Punahou's only score of the half was set up by a 30-yard kickoff return by Robert Toma to the Saint Louis 48. The Buffanblu cashed in on their best field position of the half, scoring six plays later when Shutter hit Hilliard on an 11-yard TD pass. Hilliard swung out of the backfield toward the right sideline, where he was wide open and hauled in Shutter's fade.

Saint Louis scored on three of its five first-half possessions, twice starting drives from its 41 or better. The Crusaders' first score was a 42-yard field goal by Warren Spencer. Their next series started at their 49 and ended with a three-yard TD run by running back Austin Wakinekona to make it 9-0 with three seconds left in the first quarter.

After the Buffanblu's score pulled them to 9-6 — they also missed the PAT — the Crusaders increased their lead just before the end of the half when they moved 70 yards in six plays with right slot Lucas Gonsalves catching a 27-yard pass on a crossing pattern in the end zone for the TD. Spencer's PAT gave the Saints a 16-6 lead at the half.

The Saints did a good job of picking up Punahou's blitzes. Higgins was hardly under pressure, completing 15 of 22 for 168 yards in the first half.

Still a close game, the Saints added a 20-yard field goal by Spencer to take a 19-6 lead in the third quarter. But the Crusaders blew it open with two quick fourth-quarter scores to make it 34-6 after TD passes of 38 yards to Jordan Fukumoto and 85 yards to Billy Stutzmann on a streak down the right sideline.

Punahou scored twice on TD passes by Makaula to pull to 34-19, but failed on its last onside kick attempt, giving Saint Louis possession at the Punahou 44. On fourth-and-1, Higgins scored on a 35-yard run to end the game.

Running back Brenan Furtado rushed for five touchdowns and 200 yards to lead the Monarchs (4-1 overall, 1-1 ILH) over Pac-Five in an ILH Division II game.

Furtado also had a 56-yard kickoff return to the Wolfpack 19, but the Monarchs failed to capitalize on the favorable field position. He had TD runs of 15, 67, 2, 11 and 3 yards. His five were one shy of the league record set by 'Iolani's Joe Igber in 1998.

The other two Damien TDs were on scoring passes from Stanton Pilialoha to Iokepa Bahilot (29 yards) and Makana Ka'anoi (49 yards).

Wolfpack quarterback PJ Minaya completed 27 of 45 passes for 361 yards and three TDs, but was intercepted three times. Darin Kamealoha scored four TDs three different ways. He took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a TD, scored on a 1-yard run and had TD catches of 31 and 11 yards. London Amorin had the third TD pass from Minaya.

The Wolfpack (2-3, 1-1) had three players with 100 or more receiving yards: Amorin (6 for 100), Kamealoha (7 for 118) and Dylan Gomez (9 for 134).

Kamealoha's kickoff return for a TD was the only time Pac-Five led in the game.
