MILILANI — Mililani used a balanced offensive attack led by quarterback Iosua Manuma to defeat Pearl City, 24-6, at John Kauinana Stadium last night.

The Trojans improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference before a home crowd of about 1,200. Pearl City fell to 0-5 and 0-3.

"We played a complete game," Mililani coach Darnell Arceneaux said. "We came out with a plan to run the ball and the success of the running game opened up the play-action (pass) later."

Mililani pounded out 188 rushing yards and two quarterbacks combined for 149 through the air as the Trojans outgained the Chargers in total yards, 337 to 159.

The Trojans found the end zone on their opening possession. Following a false start, Manuma hit tight end Chad Bolibol for a 32-yard gain and Trevor Lee ran in a 2-yard score on the next play. Cory Nakagawa's PAT kick made it 7-0 with 7:26 left in the first quarter.

With 4:36 left in the half, Manuma took matters into his own hands, scoring on a 6-yard quarterback keeper that capped a seven-play drive covering 73 yards. Nakagawa's extra point made it 14-0.

Nakagawa nailed a 41-yard field goal as time expired to make it 17-0 at the half.

Pearl City got its only score of the game on a 6-yard pass from Colby Young to Skye Ka'apuni midway through the third quarter, but the extra point was no good. Ka'apuni finished with a nine catches for 97 yards — both game highs.

Mililani added a touchdown on a 5-yard run by Kahi Perbera late in the third quarter to make it 24-6. He led all rushers with 59 yards on 10 carries.

"We just let another one slip away, but we gotta keep working," Pearl City coach Mel Bicoy said. "We've had some injuries and we've had some grade problems, but we've got to rise from adversity."

Manuma, who accounted 171 yards of total offense, spread the ball to six different receivers.

"We wanted to be balanced, there's always room for improvement on both sides of the ball, but a win is a win," Manuma said.

After losing their first three games, the Trojans won their second straight heading into next week's bye.

"We're 2 and 1. All we're worried about is what our record is in the Red West," Arceneaux said. "That's the record we're looking at. If we run the table, we'll be back in the same exact spot we were last year. We lost a couple, then won five in a row and came back to win the Red West. That's our goal."
