PHILADELPHIA — Brett Myers received a standing ovation from the near-capacity crowd when he came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. The cheer grew even more deafening an inning later, when Myers got J.J. Hardy to fly to left for the final out.

Another September run has the Phillies in great position to make the playoffs.

Myers pitched a two-hitter and Philadelphia moved into a tie for the NL wild-card lead, sweeping a day-night doubleheader from Milwaukee by winning the second game, 6-1, yesterday.

And with the Mets losing to Atlanta, Philadelphia moved within a game of the Mets in the NL East.

"Every night, there's somebody else picking us up," said Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino, a St. Anthony alum from Maui. "That's how you win a pennant."

Pat Burrell homered and Victorino went 4 for 4 for the surging Phillies.

Myers was throwing strikes but the Brewers couldn't find any holes. He threw 95 pitches, 65 for strikes.

"They were real aggressive," Myers said. "I wasn't really looking for the strikeout. I wasn't trying to punch them out."

In the opener, Burrell snapped out of a recent slump with two hits, including the go-ahead single in the eighth inning, and the Phillies won, 7-3.

Pitching on three days rest for the first time since Oct. 3, 2004, against Florida, Myers (10-11) gave up just a pair of hits while striking out four. Myers, who tossed his second complete game, is 7-2 with a 1.80 ERA in 11 starts since being recalled from the minor leagues on July 20. Myers also threw a complete game in a 4-0 win over Washington on Aug. 20.

It was the eighth complete game of Myers' career.

"The team needed it," said Myers, who threw first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 29 batters he faced.

Prince Fielder hit a solo homer for the Brewers, who have lost four straight and 11 of 14.

Braves 7, Mets 4: Fill-in closer Luis Ayala gave up a go-ahead homer to pinch-hitter Greg Norton, and visiting Atlanta rallied for five runs in the ninth inning and a victory that trimmed New York's NL East lead.

Rockies 1, Dodgers 0: Troy Tulowitzki singled home the winning run with one out in the 10th to help host Colorado end Los Angeles' four-game winning streak. The Dodgers, who had won 12 of 13, lead Arizona by 4 1/2 games in the NL West.

Reds 2, Diamondbacks 1: Corey Patterson homered to give visiting Cincinnati a win over slumping Arizona. With one out, the .202-hitting Patterson hit a 3-2 pitch high off the right-field foul pole against Jon Rauch (4-8), sending the Diamondbacks to their eighth loss in nine games.

Marlins 8, Nationals 7: Josh Willingham drove in the go-ahead run to help host Florida rally past Washington. Trailing 6-1, Florida scored seven runs off four Washington relievers in the eighth to go ahead 8-6.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 2: Adam LaRoche drove in three runs with a pair of hits and host Pittsburgh scored three times in both the first and second innings and went on to beat St. Louis for a three-game sweep.

Giants 8, Padres 6: Rookie Pablo Sandoval scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the 10th inning as San Francisco beat host San Diego.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3: Jon Lester (15-5) held visiting Toronto to four hits over eight innings and Coco Crisp drove in two runs to lead Boston over the Blue Jays. The Red Sox moved within one game of AL East-leading Tampa Bay, which lost to New York 8-4. Boston and the Rays begin a three-game series today in St. Petersburg, where the Red Sox are 0-6 so far this season.

WHITE SOX SWEEP TIGERS: DeWayne Wise hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth inning and host Chicago beat Detroit, 11-7, to complete a doubleheader sweep. The White Sox won the first game, 4-2, behind Javier Vazquez's 7 2/3 scoreless innings.

Yankees 8, Rays 4: Derek Jeter collected three hits for the third straight game as New York beat Tampa Bay. Jeter moved into a tie with Lou Gehrig for most career hits at Yankee Stadium (1,269).

Orioles 7, Twins 3: Radhames Liz (6-5) pitched eight shutout innings, and host Baltimore hit five home runs in a victory over Minnesota. Nick Markakis and Oscar Salazar each homered twice, and Lou Montanez also connected to help Baltimore salvage the finale of the three-game series.

Angels 4, Mariners 3: Chone Figgins singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and Mark Teixeira hit his 200th career homer as host Los Angeles beat Seattle for a four-game sweep.

Royals 13, Indians 3: Brian Bannister (8-15) gave up four hits and three runs in the first inning, then settled down and won for the first time in 14 starts to snap his nine-game losing streak as visiting Kansas City beat Cleveland.

Athletics 7, Rangers 4: Aaron Cunningham hit his first major league homer, a three-run shot that broke an eighth-inning tie and lifted host Oakland over Texas.

ELSEWHERE

White Sox: First baseman Paul Konerko still isn't sure when his sprained right knee will heal enough to let him play. "No predictions," Konerko said yesterday. The White Sox hope Konerko, who hurt himself during Tuesday's doubleheader against Toronto, will be able to play when Chicago visits the Yankees this week.
