Sumo: Hakuho wins third straight in autumn tournament

Associated Press

TOKYO — Mongolian grand champion Hakuho overpowered Kotoshogiku on Tuesday for his third straight win at the Autumn Grand Sumo tournament.

The 23-year-old wrestler quickly threw his Japanese opponent out of the ring at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.

Hakuho's main rival and fellow Mongolian grand champion, Asashoryu, was beaten by top maegashira Miyabiyama on the third day of the 15-day tournament. The popular Mongolian wrestler often stumbled during the match and was quickly forced out of the ring.

Asashoryu missed the Nagoya tournament in July with injuries and will be bidding for his 23rd Emperor's Cup title.

Mongolia's Kyokutenho beat Kotooshu by throwing the European wrestler out of the ring. The 25-year-old Bulgarian, who dropped to 1-2, made sumo history in May by becoming the first European to win an Emperor's Cup.

Baruto, a 23-year-old Estonian, stood motionless until Mongolian sekiwake Ama shoved him out of the ring. Baruto's record slipped to 1-2.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai gained another victory against Toyonoshima, improving his record to 3-0.
