500,000 ti leaves wanted to restore Kamehameha's roof

KAILUA, KONA, Hawai'i — The caretakers of Kamehameha the Great's personal residence in Kailua, Kona want 500,000 ti leaves to restore a roof on one of the buildings.

Community members can drop off ti leaves at Yano Hall in Captain Cook or at King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel.

The restoration of the Hale Mana roof at Ahuena Heiau could take four to six months after the leaves are collected.

Ahuena Heiau was the center of political power in the Hawaiian Kingdom during Kamehameha's day.

Kamehameha consulted his priests and highest advisers there. The king died on the grounds in 1819.

The complex in Kamakahonu Bay is a National Historic Landmark.
