Arnoult falls short in doubles

Pa'ia's Beth Arnoult lost in the bronze-medal wheelchair tennis doubles match at the Paralympic Games in Beijing Sunday. Arnoult and partner Kaitlyn Verfuerth, from California, were seeded fourth. They fell to the top-seeded Dutch team in the semifinals, then lost, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, to the third-seeded French team of Florence Gravellier and Arlette Racineux for a medal.
"I'm proud of how Beth and Kaitlyn fought," said U.S. head coach Dan James. "They are clearly disappointed, but I hope they are holding their heads proud."
Arnoult, in an e-mail, said the loss was followed by many tears as she remembered all those who shared her "ride to Beijing." She also finished in the top eight in singles, and plans to retire.
Closing ceremonies are tomorrow and Arnoult flies home to Maui Thursday.

UH'S FUKUROKU HONORED BY WAC
University of Hawai'i senior forward Taryn Fukuroku was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals and adding two assists in three games last week as the Rainbow Wahine went 1-1-1 on the road.
Fukuroku posted a goal and an assist in a 3-3 tie at New Mexico, an assist in a 1-2 loss to Pacific and a goal in a 5-0 win over San Francisco.
It is her first career Player of the Week honor.
After a four-game road trip, the Rainbow Wahine return to the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium to play Montana in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic Thursday at 7 p.m.

ST. FRANCIS ALUM NAMED ALL-TOURNEY
St. Francis graduate Kylie Harrington, a sophomore at Nevada, was named to the AT&T Invitational all-tournament team last weekend after averaging 3.42 kills and 2 digs. It is Harrington's second all-tournament honor this year.

EX-UH TRAINERTOTH ADDS EVENT TOMORROW
An additional date has been added to the book signing schedule for Melody Toth, author of "Let's Go 'Bows! Behind the Scenes with University of Hawaii Sports." She will autograph books Sunday at 3 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, Kahala Mall. Toth has a special event tomorrow at Hukilau Honolulu, in the lower level of Executive Center downtown. For $20, fans get a book, a beer and pupu, with 20 percent of ticket sales benefiting the UH Athletic Training Foundation in honor of the late Allen Richardson.
