'Iolani senior David Fink and Punahou sophomore Cyd Okino captured the Boys and Girls 13-18 titles on Maui last weekend, winning back-and-forth finals in the second annual Ka'anapali Golf Resort Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association Match Play Championship.

Fink outlasted Taeksoo Kim, 1-up, on the first extra hole at Royal Ka'anapali. Fink laid up his second shot on the par-5, 519-yard first hole, coming up 30 yards short in a bunker. Kim, from Wailuku, went for the green in two but hit into the water hazard. He could not get up and down for par and Fink sank a 4-foot par putt to win.

Okino, who won her second State Women's Match Play Championship this summer, edged Alina Ching, 3 and 2, in the girls final. Both girls shared the lead during the day.

Hilo's Ciera Min won the Girls 11-12 title, 10 and 8, over Kula's Marissa Uradomo. Alex Chiarella, from Makawao, won the Boys 13-14 title over Aaron Kunitomo, 3 and 2, and PJ Samiere, from Kailua, captured the Boys 11-12 title, 4 and 3, over Matthew Camacho.

Kihei's Dayna Bersamin aced the 15th hole in her consolation match with Britney Yada, who won the match, 1-up.

GREAT START FOR KONO

Stephanie Kono's collegiate debut was immensely successful. The Punahou graduate helped UCLA win its first event of the season, the Topy Cup, last week in Japan. Kono earned a share of third individually, two shots out of a first-place playoff.

The Bruins were ranked first in the preseason Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. They return their entire NCAA Tournament lineup, including first-team All-Americans Tiffany Joh and Maria Jose Uribe. They added two AJGA All-Americans, including Kono, the 2006 Hawai'i state high school champion.

The Bruins defeated Tulsa by 14 shots at the Tanagura Country Club in Fukushima, with a 54-hole total of even-par 864. UCLA shot 4-under 284 in the final round, with Kono and individual medalist Glory Yang closing with rounds of 2-under 70.

Yang's birdie on the second playoff hole gave her the championship after she tied with Akari Yamamoto of Doshisha at 212 for 54 holes. Kono shot 214 to tie for third. UCLA's Sydney Michaels and Uribe shared sixth at 220.

JUNIOR EVENT AT PUAKEA

Puakea Golf Course in Lihu'e will host a Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association Junior Tour Series stop Saturday and Sunday.
