Workshop aims to prevent ACL injuries

Advertiser Staff

A free workshop on how to help prevent anterior cruciate ligament injuries in female athletes will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at 'Iolani School's Seto Hall.

The program — called "PEP: Prevent injury, Enhance Performance" — will be administered by Action Rehab, a physical therapy firm in Honolulu. The featured speaker will be Dr. Elizabeth Ignacio.

According to Action Rehab, the PEP program "is the only research-based exercise protocol that has been proven to reduce non-contact ACL injuries, which comprise 70 percent of all injuries in female athletes."

Females reportedly are two to eight times more susceptible to ACL injuries than males.

The interactive seminar will teach attendees how the PEP program can reduce non-contact ACL injuries by up to 80 percent, including strengthening and stretching routines to supplement current warm-up programs.

Guests are asked to use the school's parking structure.

KAMEHAMEHA AND 'IOLANI VOLLEYBALL OFF TO VEGAS

Fresh off a key Interscholastic League of Honolulu victory at Hawai'i Baptist, the Kamehameha girls volleyball team left for Las Vegas yesterday and will compete in the prestigious Durango Fall Classic national tournament tomorrow and Saturday.

The three-time defending state champion Warriors, 8-0 in the ILH and ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, took third in last year's Durango Classic, losing to www.Prepvolleyball.com's 2007 preseason No. 1 team, Assumption (Louisville, Ky.), in the semifinals.

Defending state runner-up 'Iolani (7-1 ILH, No. 5 in Advertiser poll) also will be competing in the Durango tournament.

Seven California schools in the 32-team field were ranked in www.Prepvolleyball.com's national Top 25 last week; La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) was No. 1, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) was No. 2, Lakewood (Calif.) was No. 6 and Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) No. 8.
