ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — On a night Evan Longoria hit three home runs for Tampa Bay, an unlikely source of power upstaged the Rays' rookie slugger.

Alexi Casilla went deep during Minnesota's five-run ninth inning last night, helping the Twins rally for an 11-8 victory that stopped a four-game losing streak and pulled them within 1 1/2 games of the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox, who lost to the New York Yankees, 9-2.

Casilla's two-run drive off Dan Wheeler (5-6) tied it at 8. With two runners on, pinch-hitter Adam Everett squared to bunt, pulled his bat back and ripped an RBI double to break the tie.

Delmon Young followed with a run-scoring single and Matt Tolbert added a sacrifice fly as the AL East-leading Rays saw their lead over Boston in the division trimmed to 1 1/2 games.

"It's huge. There's no question," Everett said. "You've seen it from the beginning of September to now. We've had games snatched from us from the ninth inning on. For us to snatch a game away from a team like Tampa Bay and their pitching staff, that's huge for us."

Longoria, who returned to the lineup last Saturday after being sidelined with a broken wrist, hit a two-run homer in Tampa Bay's five-run first against Glen Perkins. The All-Star third baseman added solo shots off Philip Humber in the fourth and Bobby Korecky in the seventh for an 8-6 lead.

YANKEES 9, WHITE SOX 2

Bobby Abreu homered twice and drove in six runs, and Mike Mussina (18-9) earned his 268th win, tying Hall of Famer Jim Palmer for 33rd on the career list, to lead host New York.

Mussina gave up one run and five hits in six-plus innings, and still has a chance for his first 20-win season with starts left at Toronto and Boston.

ANGELS 6, ATHLETICS 4

Kendry Morales, Mike Napoli and Brandon Wood hit consecutive home runs in a span of four pitches from Keith Foulke in the seventh inning as AL West champion Los Angeles avoided a three-game sweep.

The Angels hit three straight homers for the first time since May 24, 2004, at Toronto, in support of Joe Saunders (16-7).

BLUE JAYS 3, ORIOLES 2

Jose Bautista homered in the first inning, pinch-hitter Gregg Zaun doubled home the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth, and Jesse Litsch (12-8) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings to lift host Toronto.

ROYALS 12, MARINERS 0

Zack Greinke (12-10) gave up two hits in seven-plus innings, two relievers finished the three-hitter and Mike Aviles hit a three-run homer as host Kansas City completed its first four-game sweep of Seattle in 19 years.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

DODGERS 4, PIRATES 3

James Loney singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning after Pittsburgh reliever Craig Hansen walked the bases full as Los Angeles inched closer to winning the NL West.

The Dodgers have a 3 1/2-game lead over Arizona and their magic number for winning the division is seven, in any combination of Los Angeles wins and Arizona losses.

PHILLIES 4, BRAVES 3

Pat Burrell hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning and Philadelphia completed a nine-game, season-series sweep in Atlanta.

The Phillies remained a half-game ahead of the Mets in the NL East with their seventh straight win.

METS 7, NATIONALS 2

Johan Santana (14-7) took a shutout into the seventh inning and Brian Schneider hit two home runs as visiting New York beat Washington to stretch its wild-card lead to 1 1/2 games over Milwaukee.

Santana gave up a run and eight hits in seven innings to improve to 7-0 with a 2.26 ERA over his last 14 starts.

DIAMONDBACKS 3, GIANTS 2

Adam Dunn's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 2-all tie and Arizona handed Tim Lincecum (17-4) his first loss in two months by completing a four-game sweep of San Francisco.

MARLINS 8, ASTROS 1

Scott Olsen (8-10) allowed one run on three hits over seven innings and John Baker drove in four runs, leading host Florida over Houston for its eighth straight victory.

CARDINALS 5, REDS 4

Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer and Kyle Lohse (14-6) gave up three runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings to win his first start since coming off a five-game suspension as visiting St. Louis snapped a season-high seven-game losing streak.
