Advertiser Staff

A brushfire Friday morning at the back of Pupukea Road near the Boy Scout campgrounds was sparked by a barbecue grill left unattended by a homeless man who fell asleep, officials said.

The fire at 59-780 Pupukea Road started at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Police stopped a 39-year-old man for questioning when they saw him walking out of a ravine after the fire started, said Wahiawa Police Sgt. Eric Tonouchi.

The fire burned about one-tenth of an acre and was was extinguished about 2 p.m., police said.

The man told police he had been living in the area for about four months and had fallen asleep with the lighted hibachi.
