KAILUA — Ani Isumu caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Dayton Kealoha with four seconds remaining last night to lift Farrington to a thrilling 17-14 victory over Kailua in O'ahu Interscholastic Association action.

The Governors, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division.

The Surfriders fell to 0-5, 0-4 after its fourth narrow loss.

Kailua looked poised for the season's biggest upset after Kapena Alameda caught a deflected pass on the Govs' 7-yard line and ran it in for a 32-yard TD pass play, with Trey Tam's extra point giving the Surfers their first lead of the game at 14-10 with 46 seconds left.

One play after Andrew Noga returned the ensuing kickoff to the Farrington 46, Kealoha completed a 32-yard pass to Drake Miller to put the ball at the Kailua 22 with 18 seconds remaining. Kealoha then rolled out to his right and tucked the ball in to rumble 14 yards to the 8-yard line, and the Governors called timeout with 8 ticks left.

That's when they called a play nicknamed "X-Y fade," in which the left-handed Kealoha took a one-step drop and lofted a high-arching pass to the back left corner of the end zone. Isumu caught the ball over his right shoulder and got both feet in near the pylon.

"I was worried about the back (line)," said Isumu, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound junior. "When I saw the ball in the air, I said, 'That's mine, I gotta get it.' "

Farrington went up 7-0 with just 12 seconds remaining in the half after Kealoha's 3-yard touchdown pass to Isumu.

The Governors made it 10-0 three minutes into the fourth quarter on Apelu So'oalo's 45-yard field goal, but the Surfriders closed it to 10-7 on a 24-yard TD pass from Bobby Lastimosa to Corey Lau and Tam's extra point with 3:43 left.

After Farrington went three-and-out on its next possession, Kailua marched 80 yards in 10 plays, including two fourth-down conversions. On the touchdown pass, Lastimosa threw to about the 10-yard line but the ball was tipped by Govs safety James Smith. Lau stopped and turned to catch the deflection and then ran in untouched.

But the celebration was short-lived as Farrington answered with the winning drive.

"Our whole season's been like this," Surfriders coach Gary Rosolowich said. "It's a tough loss, but our kids battled, and I'm proud of them."
